What Are Card Rebates?
Third-party sites pay you to apply for credit cards through their links. It’s affiliate marketing — the bank pays them a commission, they share a slice with you. In Canada, the main players are FrugalFlyer, GreatCanadianRebates (GCR), CreditCardGenius, and FinlyWealth.
How Much Can You Earn?
Rebates typically range from $50 to $175 per approved card. On a single application, that can offset most or all of a first-year annual fee. Stack that with first-year-free offers, and you’re getting paid to collect points.

The Fine Print
- Timing: Rebates take 8-12 weeks after approval to arrive
- Tracking: Must click through the rebate site — ad blockers can break tracking
- Stacking: You can’t combine rebates with referrals or other promotions
- Cancellations: Some sites claw back rebates if you cancel within 6 months
Which Site to Use?
FrugalFlyer: Usually highest payouts for BMO, Scotiabank. PayPal payments. $20 loyalty bonus every 4 approvals.
GCR: Most reliable for Amex, TD. 25% referral bonus program.
CreditCardGenius: Competitive on MBNA ($200 vs $100 elsewhere).
Bottom Line
Always check 2-3 sites before applying. The difference between $100 and $175 on the same card is real money for 30 seconds of checking.
Rebate rates change frequently. Check sites directly before applying.
